Healing Together: How Avalon Supports Couples on the Journey to Recovery
By Kenneth A. Vick, Executive Director – Avalon Wellness & Recovery Center
Recovery is deeply personal, yet it rarely happens in isolation. Addiction affects individuals, families, and relationships in profound ways. For many couples, substance use has been woven into their shared story. When both partners decide to seek recovery, the idea of being separated during treatment can feel discouraging or even impossible.
At Avalon Wellness & Recovery Center, we understand that reality. We’ve seen how love and connection can be powerful motivators for change. That’s why we’ve built a program that makes room for couples who want to heal, not by enabling unhealthy patterns, but by helping both people grow stronger as individuals and as partners.
Why Avalon Welcomes Couples
Few treatment centers offer options for couples seeking recovery together. Many programs require complete separation, believing it’s the only way for each person to focus on themselves. While there’s truth in the need for personal space to heal, we also recognize that connection is one of the most significant protective factors in recovery.
At Avalon, couples are welcome to enter treatment together, with careful structure and support. Each person receives their own clinical assessment, counselor, and individualized plan of care. We don’t place couples in the same room, not because we don’t value their relationship, but because we value their recovery first. Healing begins when both individuals can stand strong on their own foundation.
The Balance Between Independence and Connection
Recovery for couples requires balance: the courage to look inward and the willingness to grow together. Our team helps couples learn how to communicate more honestly, rebuild trust, and establish health boundaries. We guide them in identifying patterns that may have fueled substance use and in replacing them with patterns that nurture stability, accountability, and shared growth.
Our therapeutic model integrates evidence-based approaches, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and person-centered care. Each of these tools supports self-awareness, interpersonal communication and emotional regulation, skills that not only strengthen recovery but also strengthen relationships.
Couples who recover together often discover a new way to relate to one another, one rooted in respect, patience, and understanding rather than codependency or fear.
“No One Recovers Alone”
This phrase is more than a slogan at Avalon; it’s a guiding truth. Healing is relational. It happens in connection with others, whether through family, peers, mentors, or partners who are also doing the work.
For couples, this means learning how to be part of each other’s recovery story without taking over the other’s process. It means showing up not to control, but to encourage. It means learning that love and accountability can coexist, and that both are essential to lasting change.
A Path Forward, Together
When couples enter Avalon, they aren’t just enrolling in a treatment program; they’re beginning a shared chapter of growth and rediscovery. We help them understand that their relationship can become a source of strength rather than a trigger for relapse.
Recovery is never easy. But with the proper structure, support, and guidance, couples can learn to heal in parallel, building healthier habits, more profound empathy, and a renewed sense of purpose.
At Avalon Wellness & Recovery, we’re proud to offer a space where healing relationships are part of healing lives. Because when two people commit to recovery together, their potential for transformation multiplies.
Recovery Starts Here. Recovery Grows Together.

I can’t say enough about how nice this facility is and how amazing the staff is. As a family member of a recovering addict it truly brings relief to my heart knowing the workers at Avalon genuinely want to help and bring recovery for the people we love. The love and support without judgement is healing and I cannot recommend them enough! Truly, so grateful for them.

Avalon saved my life!
I was in a pit of misery and despair. My twenty plus years of addiction to meth, and my frequent visits to prison took so much time from my family that I felt like a outcast. In my darkest times I had lost the will to live.
Avalon met my wife and I where we were. Meaning in our addiction. They treated us with kindness and absolute understanding, because many of the staff have been down the same paths. There’s nothing like a bunch of complete strangers treating you like they’ve known you for years. Not passing judgement, or acting like they’re above you.
Their approach to addiction counseling is so easy going and understandable that it’s a wonder they ever have open beds. This place is beautiful. The staff is amazing! The CEO makes himself available to clients for small talk and wisdom. The Director is a Wizard! From the Nursing Staff to the Clinical Staff everyone comes to work smiling. You can clearly tell everyone in the building has your best interest at heart.
Today my wife and I are doing amazing. Avalon has armed us with tools to battle our addiction. The work is a constant grind. But it is worth every minute. I’m now available for my family in a way I have never been.
There is no way to measure the gratitude I have for the people at 801 Iowa St. These people are my family now. They are genuine and intentional in all they do. Lawrence, Kansas is lucky to have this place in the community. For it not for them I would still be either in jail, prison, or worse DEAD.
Thank you Avalon! For helping me to take back my life.
God Bless

I have never stepped foot in a more beautiful place to recover. Not only that, but I have never been apart of such an amazing, supportive team of people that all have the same vision of helping the next addict/alcoholic find their way to their own recovery journey. This place has by far exceeded any expectations that I had. I only wish that I would have had a chance to start my own recovery journey off here over 13 years ago. Top Notch!!

Amazing leadership and a client centered mentality. They use Evidence based recovery techniques combined with 12 step programs. Brand new facility just opened a bit over a month ago. Has a gym, sauna, client recreation with old style stand up arcade games, air hockey, and TV. I wish this facility had been available when I started my recovery. Full inpatient treatment with medically assisted detox! They are even working on opening up the pool! This place is great!!
